The Session: Situational Awareness

The most dangerous hiker is the one staring at their phone. In this session, we move from “following the blue dot” to actually understanding the landscape. Lee covers the full spectrum of navigation, from ancient observation techniques to modern satellite tools.

The Syllabus:

  • Navigation Strategies: Handrails & Backstops — Mental models to move through terrain without constantly checking your device.
  • Observational Navigation: Heads-Up Mapping — Using line-of-sight and landmarks to maintain situational awareness.
  • Maps & Compass: The Analog Backup — Why batteries die but magnetic north doesn’t. Basic orientation skills.
  • Tech & Apps: Digital Competence — Best practices for Gaia, CalTopo, and OnX (and how to download offline maps).
